We’re looking for our next Staff Writer. Could It Be You?
QuestMedia is the new, in-house, multi-format content division launched by Questrade to reimagine how Canadians learn about money, markets, and their financial lives. Our flagship publication, The Margin, covers money and the culture around it for Canadians who want more than the typical personal finance advice column. If you're excited about producing financial journalism that actually has something to say, this is the role for you.
The Staff Writer will be a foundational member of the team, working directly with the Deputy Editor and Content Lead to help shape and grow QuestMedia.
We understand that candidates may not meet 100% of the listed qualifications. If you are excited by this opportunity and believe you have the essential skills and passion to make a major impact at QuestMedia, we strongly encourage you to apply. We highly value diverse backgrounds and experience and encourage all interested individuals to submit an application

Reporting to the Deputy Editor and working closely with the Content Lead, the Staff Writer will produce a mix of daily reactive pieces and longer-lead reported stories. You'll be creating financial content that has a genuine point of view, whether that's a quick reaction to breaking news or a deep-dive feature. Even when explaining how something works, you're showing readers why it matters and what to make of it.
In this role, responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Content creation: This is a journalism role, not content marketing. You'll be reporting, interviewing sources, and producing compelling stories based on your research. Write 3-5 pieces per week across formats, including quick daily hits responding to market news or cultural moments, medium-length analyses, and occasional longer reported features and deep dives.
- Reporting: Conduct interviews with financial experts, industry insiders, and real people navigating Canadian financial systems. Source and verify data from Canadian institutions (StatsCan, Bank of Canada, industry associations). Build relationships with sources who can provide informed, credible perspectives.
- Collaboration: Work with the Content Lead and Deputy Editor to develop story angles, refine arguments, and shape content strategy. Participate in editorial meetings, pitch ideas, and contribute to the overall editorial direction of The Margin.
- Cross-platform contributions: As part of a small team, jump in where needed, whether that's appearing in social videos, contributing to podcast discussions, or helping shape new content formats as we build them.
So are YOU our next Staff Writer? You are if you…
You're a strong writer who can conduct interviews, build sources, verify data, and produce engaging pieces that sound like a human wrote them. You understand the difference between an observation and an argument, and you know how to build a piece around a thesis that your reporting supports. You're comfortable explaining complex topics clearly without treating readers like beginners, and you're excited to learn more about Canadian financial markets, products, and policy. You're comfortable pitching angles that sit outside typical market coverage, especially where money and culture collide.
- Have 2-4 years of experience in journalism, digital media, or content creation. Experience in business or financial journalism is a bonus, but not required if you have strong writing chops and genuine interest in the beat.
- Have a portfolio that demonstrates voice and point of view. We want to see writing that sounds like a real person, not generic content. Bonus if you've written about money, markets, or economics.
- Have familiarity with Canadian personal finance (TFSAs, RRSPs, FHSAs) or enthusiasm to get up to speed quickly. You should understand why the Canadian market has its own dynamics that don't mirror the US.
- Are comfortable with reporting and interviews. You can cold-pitch sources, conduct interviews that go beyond surface-level answers, fact-check your own work, and weave quotes into a piece that still sounds like your voice.
- Have the ability to write quickly without sacrificing quality. Some stories will need to be turned around in hours, not days.
- Have a collaborative mindset. You take feedback well, you're willing to revise, and you're excited to be part of a small team where everyone's input matters.
- Have a Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Additional kudos if you…
- Have podcasting and/or on-camera experience
Compensation Information:
- Base salary range: $80,000 - $95,000
- The final compensation package will be commensurate with the successful candidate's experience, skills, and geographic location (Canada). It includes a comprehensive benefits plan and a competitive incentive (bonus) program for Full-Time Permanent roles.
