Location: REMOTE / Nashville, Tennessee
This job allows you to work remotely.
Our client is a venture-backed digital health company reshaping how people with joint, back, and muscle (musculoskeletal) conditions get specialty care. The company builds a complete picture of each patient (symptoms, medical history, preferences, and personal goals) and combines it with predictive models and current clinical guidelines to point that person toward the treatment most likely to work for them, then supports them all the way through it.
The company is remote-first with a home base in Nashville, and is scaling quickly as it signs new health plan partners and enters new markets. The team is collaborative, curious, and driven by the mission of getting people out of pain.
This Role:
The VP of Engineering will lead the engineering organization behind everything patients and care teams touch, reporting to the CTO. You will own three product engineering teams that blend data science, machine learning, and software engineering: one that decides the best next step for each patient, one that carries those steps to patients through the app, messaging, and voice channels, and one that builds the workflow tools the clinical and care staff rely on daily. Between them, these teams cover the full patient journey from the first outreach to the end of care. Data platform and infrastructure teams are peers under the CTO and provide the foundation your teams build on.
You will set the engineering plan for the patient journey jointly with Product, develop the directors and managers who run your teams, and own your organization's commitments and progress in front of the executive team. You will be measured on results rather than output: a decisioning platform steering real patient-level decisions, patient activation that rises because of what your teams shipped, a leadership bench visibly stronger than the one you inherited, and commitments that hold. This is a senior, high-impact seat in a company where the hardest and most interesting problem is making predictive models change what happens to patients.
You Will:
• Lead three product engineering teams through their directors and managers, accountable for their results, delivery, and talent
• Own the technology, data, and decisioning systems behind patient engagement, care activities, and care completion, judged on business outcomes
• Build the engineering strategy and roadmap with Product and your engineering and data science leaders, and set operational goals jointly with value-based care and clinical leadership
• Share roadmap ownership with Product leadership under clear decision rights, with the final call on technical feasibility, sequencing, and engineering capacity
• Build strong peer partnerships with Clinical Operations, Patient Engagement, Marketing, Medical Economics, and the platform teams
• Make the engineering call on hard tradeoffs, such as decision quality versus channel execution or outreach volume versus patient experience, and escalate to the CTO when a choice would shift company strategy
• Hire, develop, and hold accountable your directors and managers; turn first-time engineering managers into strong leads; own team design and succession
• Make sure no client or date commitment is made until Engineering and Product agree it can be built, and keep executives current on delivery against the roadmap
• Set architecture for patient-facing and care-team systems within the CTO's technical direction, make build-versus-buy decisions, and own the engineering practices that let teams ship quickly and safely
• Own the compliance posture of your systems, which handle protected health information under HIPAA in a HITRUST-certified environment
• Travel occasionally (up to roughly 10%) for onsite meetings, team sessions, and company events
Must Have Skills:
• 12+ years in software engineering, including 7+ years leading multi-team organizations through directors or managers
• Has owned a business metric the company tracked, not just delivery, and can explain how engineering decisions moved it
• Proven record of developing leaders, including growing first-time engineering managers into capable leads (references will be requested)
• Keeps commitments realistic: raises feasibility concerns before promises are made and hits hard external deadlines without cutting quality
• Strong, trusting partnerships with product management built on clear decision rights and shared accountability rather than a requirements handoff
• Startup or scale-up experience where structure had to be built rather than inherited
• Working knowledge of data-intensive, ML-driven systems in production across the model lifecycle: training data, features, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring
• Experience with customer-facing and workflow systems at scale: mobile and web apps, messaging and contact center platforms, and the integrations between them
• Sound architecture judgment: can read data-flow and system diagrams, catch missed dependencies, and make build-versus-buy calls that account for cost and risk
• Strong engineering practice: DORA delivery metrics, production readiness, observability, and code review and release discipline
• Fluency with cloud infrastructure, modern data platforms, and event-driven integration patterns
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent experience
Nice to Have Skills:
• Healthcare, payer, or value-based care experience, and familiarity with HIPAA-regulated systems
• Contact center, telephony, or omni-channel patient or customer engagement platforms
• Shipping decisioning or personalization systems where model output triggers real-world actions
• Experience with CRM platforms
• Advanced degree in a quantitative field
