Relay is a digital banking platform that gives self-made business owners the tools and know-how to be great with money—bringing clarity, confidence, and control to every dollar earned, so they can turn hard work into lasting success. We do this by replacing financial guesswork with real visibility, transforming cash flow from a constant source of stress into a clear signal owners can use to run stronger, more resilient businesses.
Design plays a critical role in making that possible.
Relay is at an important inflection point. We’ve built strong product momentum, but as we scale, design quality, consistency, and foundational UX work are increasingly under pressure from delivery speed and roadmap demands. Some core experiences need refinement, some systems need cohesion, and design judgment needs to scale beyond any single leader. This role exists to help solve that.
As our Senior Manager, Product Design, you’ll lead a group of product designers across multiple product areas, raising the bar for design quality while operating in a fast-moving, scaling environment. You’ll help ensure that what we ship is not just fast - but clear, thoughtful, and durable.
This is a role for someone who finds that challenge motivating.
What you’ll be doing
Lead and support a group of product designers across multiple product areas, helping them deliver consistently high-quality, user-centered work
Set and uphold a high bar for design quality and UX craft, providing clear, actionable feedback through critiques and coaching
Partner closely with Product and Engineering leaders to shape problems early, make smart tradeoffs, and drive strong cross-functional collaboration
Advocate for foundational UX improvements alongside new feature work, ensuring critical customer needs don’t get lost in the roadmap
Ensure designs are thoughtful, feasible, and grounded in technical reality by collaborating deeply with engineering partners
Contribute to and evolve Relay’s design systems, improving consistency, flexibility, and scalability across the product
Balance near-term delivery with long-term systems thinking, making pragmatic decisions under real constraints
Stay close to the work: while this is a leadership role, there may be times you’ll roll up your sleeves or step in to help move things forward
Success in this role is measured less by volume shipped and more by design quality, team growth, clarity of experience, and product impact.
You would be a great fit if you:
Have significant experience leading and mentoring product designers, including managing experienced designers
Bring exceptional design taste and judgment, with a clear point of view on what makes products feel intuitive, usable, and well-crafted
Are deeply grounded in UX fundamentals and systems thinking, considering flows, states, edge cases, and long-term implications - not just screens
Can clearly articulate design decisions, especially when the right answer isn’t obvious
Are comfortable operating in ambiguity, making thoughtful tradeoffs in fast-moving environments
Partner effectively across product and engineering around a shared vision, understanding technical constraints and implementation realities
Are motivated by outcomes. You are product minded, and think beyond deliverables to user and business impact
Are energized by building and improving things over time, even when the environment isn’t perfect
Nice to have
Experience working on complex, B2B, or systems-heavy products
Experience scaling teams or design practices as a product organization grows
Experience owning or evolving a design system
Working familiarity with frontend technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript)
Experience at a startup or scaling company
What to expect from this role
This is a hands-on leadership role in a growing product organization. You’ll be trusted with real ownership, real decisions, and real tradeoffs. There will be moments of ambiguity, moments of constraint, and moments where progress isn’t linear - and that’s part of the work.
If you’re excited by the idea of raising the quality bar, developing strong designers, and shaping meaningful product experiences alongside thoughtful partners, we’d love to talk.
